Welcome to Aimee Heaviside, Trial Nutritionist

I am Aimee Heaviside the Nutritionist working on the CAPP2 Food Diary Project. The CAPP2 team and the Human Nutrition Research Centre at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne are working together on this part of the project.

I am based in Newcastle upon Tyne, but I am frequently travelling around the UK distributing and collecting food diaries. This data collection began in October 2003 and is expected to continue for another year.

As you may be aware, diet plays a significant role in the development of bowel cancer. We believe that it is important to record a 'snapshot' of what you eat during the time you are taking the CAPP2 treatments. To do this we are asking recruits in the UK to consent to completing  a food diary. This requires recruits to record everything they eat over 4 consecutive days.

I then visit the recruit within 3 days of diary completion and go through their record with them in order to gain more detailed information about the foods they ate. In addition, recruits have their weight and height measured and provide a urine sample.

So far we have had a good response with 74% consenting to complete the food diary. We have already collected 28 diaries and urine samples. We are hoping to extend the urine sample collection further in 2004. For those UK recruits who have not consented and wish to, I will be sending out a further letter in 2004 to give you another opportunity to take part.
